Glacial flood from Katla interrupts ring road! After a relatively quiet year, the alert level of the volcano has been raised to yellow by Icelandic authorities. A strong glacial flood started yesterday, increasing the flow rate of the Skálm river to more than 1000 cubic meters a second, resulting in the destruction of a part of the ring road and bridge over the river.Following road closures along the south coast due to the recent glacial flood, the main Ring Road is now open again.Repairs are currently in progress on the Ring Road east of the Skálm River, which was damaged yesterday due to flooding from the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Approximately 700 meters of road were affected by the flooding. As of now, only single-lane traffic is permitted on the damaged section.🌋 VolcanoDiscovery activity update:👉 https://lnkd.in/epsaeteY#remotesensing #earthobservation #volcanomonitoring #volcanology #pythonprogramming #datascience #opentowork

In Xiangtan County, Hunan Province, three dike breaches have occurred along the Juanshui River, with one being successfully sealed. As a consequence of Typhoon Gaemi, flooding has reached record levels. Rescuers, including over 1,200 personnel from various agencies, have been mobilized for search and evacuation efforts, utilizing technology like drones and hydrological surveying boats. In Dandong, Liaoning Province, continuous heavy rains have caused significant flooding, displacing over 28,700 residents, while China's meteorological authorities have issued an orange alert for rainstorms across affected regions. Emergency responses have also been raised in Chongqing Municipality as additional torrential storms are anticipated.#AsiaRisk #ExtremeWeatherEvents #ChinaFollow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia!https://lnkd.in/gJUzVFQZ

The state of Rio Grande Do Sul in Brazil experienced what commentators have called unprecedented floods caused by torrential rains, which have resulted in a loss of lives, and displacement of people from their homes, while some people are still missing. This has led to the damage of critical infrastructure like roads, an airport, and stadiums and disruption of socio-economic activities.I used Sentinel-2 Images to delineate the extent of the flood and the result shows that the floods affected many cities/towns including the state capital, Porto Alegre. Based on the extent of my analysis, approximately 2,665km2 flooded area was detected.Again, geospatial technologies and free-available data in disaster management play a vital role in disaster management. My heart goes out to those affected by this catastrophic flood.#Flood #RioGrandeDoSul #PortoAlegre #GIS
